“What kind of DJ cooks like this?” they asked. “The Italian-American kind,” I told them, and they cursed me in Italian. It was great.

ABOUT A YEAR after I’d been hired by the Gambinos, I hooked up with a girl bartender of theirs. After shutting down the club one night, we went to a diner across the street for something to eat, and later got a room, where I knocked her goofy. Early the next morning, I drove the girl back to her car. Almost immediately, we were surrounded by three other cars.

It’s a hit, I thought.

“Oh, shit,” she said. “It’s John.”

“Who the fuck is John?”

Then a guy got out of one of the cars, ordered the girl inside, and gave me a warning:

“Stay the fuck away from my girl or you’ll get your legs broke.”

I didn’t know how many other guys were in the cars or if this guy had a gun, so I played it safe and took off.

When I got home, I was concerned about what had happened and prepared for the worst. I called my friend Anthony and told him the story.

“Listen,” I told Anthony, “we gotta be ready for these guys tonight if they show up again. I’ll be holding. Make sure you’ve got something, too.”

My father called me downstairs. He had been at home, recovering from a work accident—a twelve-hundred-pound fence fell on him while he was making deliveries, leaving him with two broken legs, laid up in a body cast, and confined to bed. He was resting in the parlor and heard every word of my conversation with Anthony on the extension.
